UVU will start play in the fall of 2014 and compete in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) like the rest of UVU's sports, with the exception of wrestling (Western Wrestling Conference).
- Who will the head coach be?
On Feb. 27, UVU athletics announced the hiring of Greg Maas as the first head coach of Wolverine men's soccer. Maas has served as the technical director for the Utah Youth Soccer Association for the past 12 years and as the Real Salt Lake U-17 coach for the last five. He has also directed the Olympic Development Program -- Utah's premier soccer program for some of the most talented amateur players in the state and U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV. For more information on Coach Maas' hiring, view the full release here.
As announced May 8, Matt Ellinger will join the UVU men's soccer staff as Associate Head Coach. Ellinger comes to Utah Valley from the University of Utah where he was the head coach of the men's soccer club team. Like Maas, he has also worked with the Real Salt Lake organization, serving as the Creative Services Manager as well as the head coach of the U16 and U17 teams. He was also an assistant coach for the men's soccer program at the University of Central Arkansas. The complete release detailing Ellinger's hire can be found here.
- Why men's soccer?
UVU will be the only NCAA Division I men's soccer program in Utah and will fill a void in the soccer community, while also giving scholarship opportunities to potential student-athletes.
- I'm a potential student-athlete. How can I be on the team?
All student-athletes much first be eligible through the NCAA Eligibility Center to play at the NCAA DI level. This will require submission of test scores, an official high school transcript, and amateurism questionnaire. Also, application and admission online to UVU is required through www.UVU.edu. Prospective student-athletes are also encouraged to complete and submit to associate head coach Matt Ellinger the Men's Soccer Recruit Form (must be completed, saved, and submitted as an email attachment). This will provide the coaching staff with introductory information with which to begin the recruitment process.
- How can I get involved?
There has been a tremendous outpouring of interest and support for the program. Financial support from the soccer community is needed to help the program reach its full potential, which we expect will be extremely competitive at the Division I level.
