OREM, Utah - Eight Wolverine wrestlers placed and transfer Blake Mangum (125 pounds) and sophomore Glenn Terrano (141) led the way by each winning titles for Utah Valley Saturday at the fifth annual UVU Open in Orem.
Mangum, who recently transferred to UVU from Oklahoma, went 4-0 at the open and won his title by picking up a 6-2 win over CSU Bakersfield's Ian Nickell in the finals. Terrano too went a perfect 4-0 and picked up his championship by defeating teammate Sam Mecham in the title bout, 10-5.
In all four of the eight Wolverines that placed were competing for UVU at the meet while the other four are redshirting this season and were competed unattached.
The two that placed for the Wolverines were Mecham, who finished second at 141 pounds after a 3-1 tournament, and heavyweight Dustin Dennison, who finished in fourth place after a 4-2 outing. The four redshirts that placed while competing unattached were Chase Cuthbertson (2nd at 157), Kyle Cuthbertson (2nd at 174), Derek Thomas (2nd at 184) and Jade Rauser (3rd at 125),
Despite the success UVU head coach Greg Williams wasn't too pleased with his team and its effort on Saturday.
"I don't feel like our guys wrestled tough enough for it being this far in the season. There are things that we've worked on doing in certain situations and we're not doing them," he said. "The guys know that they are talented and they seem to believe in themselves, but I'm going to be calling them out this week."
"We have to have heart for the full seven minutes or however long the match takes. We will be going back in the room and working on that as well as a number of other things. Our guys basically don't know how good they are or how good they can become. We've spent a lot of time showing them and telling them what they can do and we expect those results."
In all seven wrestlers competed attached to UVU at the open while nine others competed unattached for the Wolverines.
At the open, UVU took on competitors from Boise State, Wyoming, CSU Bakersfield and a number of other Division II and Junior College schools.
Utah Valley will stay home and host a much-anticipated rematch against Boise State on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. The last time that UVU and BSU met up in Orem, the Wolverines knocked off the then eighth-ranked Broncos, 22-20 on Feb. 5, 2010.
The Wolverines will then face No. 9 Oklahoma, UT Chattanooga and Brown at the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas on Saturday, Jan 14.
