Four Utah Valley Wrestlers Win Titles at the UVU Open

OREM, Utah -- Four Utah Valley wrestlers win individual titles at the third annual UVU Open Saturday in Orem as two others place second. Jeb Clark, Wyatt Ray, Josh Wood, and Ikeru Abe (unattached) all won their respective weight classes to lead UVU while Monte Schmalhaus and Dylan Stadel (unattached) both placed second.

"It was a great tournament for our freshman today," UVU head coach Greg Williams said. "Wyatt (Ray), Ikeru (Abe), and Josh (Wood) all had good tournaments. They all wrestled very well. We were also pleased to get Jeb (Clark) some matches finally this season as well."

Seeing his first action on the season, after returning from an injury, UVU junior Jeb Clark fared very well as he won the 165-pound title. Clark defeated his teammate freshman Monte Schmalhaus in the title-bout as he scored a 7-0 decision victory in the finals. Clark finished 3-0 at the open. Schmalhaus placed second and posted a 2-1 record on the day.

At 141-pounds, UVU freshman Wyatt Ray had a good tournament as well as he battled to an impressive 4-0 record and capped off his good showing by winning his weight-bracket. Ray, who won his first three matches by a combined total of six points, was able to win the title as he defeated Mesa State's Rhett Breed with a 5-1 decision.

 

 

Wolverine freshman Josh Wood (197-pounds) went 3-0 during his tournament run to win his respective weight division. Wood dominated his competition at the open as he won two matches by fall and the other by major decision. In the final bout, Wood defeated Boise State's (unattached) Chris Givens by fall as he pinned him 1:47 into the match.

Ikeru Abe, who is redshirting this year for UVU, competed unattached for the Wolverines and went an impressive 4-0 to win the 149-pound championship. Abe scored a takedown in win his final bout in overtime as he defeated Western Wyoming's Rodney Dollar, 7-5.

Unattached Wolverine wrestlers Abner Cook (157) and Paul Johnson (125) both placed third at the open while Clay Frost finished with a fourth place finish.

Utah Valley now travel to Arlington, Texas to take on Arizona State, Harvard and Brown next Saturday at the Lone Star Duals.
