DES MOINES, Iowa - All three Utah Valley University wrestlers dropped their opening matches at the 2013 NCAA Championships Thursday morning at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. Sophomore heavyweight Adam Fager, redshirt freshman Jade Rauser (125 pounds) and senior Josh Wilson (149) will all now face must-win matches in the wrestleback brackets tonight.
Fager (20-11) took to the mat first for the Wolverines in the pigtail round and jumped out to an early lead against Iowa State's Matt Gibson (18-9) by taking him down in the first period. Gibson answered right back, however, with a reversal and three-point nearfall at the end of the first to take a 5-2 lead over the UVU heavyweight. Gibson then put Fager away by adding another takedown in the second, a reversal in the third and riding time to defeat him by major decision, 10-2.
Fager will now face Penn State's Jimmy Lawson (21-9) in the wrestlebacks tonight.
Rauser (20-9), who received a tough draw to open his first tournament run, took on No. 2 Jesse Delgado (22-3) in his first-round bout. Delgado, who finished seventh at the NCAA Championships a year ago, showed why he is the two-seed this season as he jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the UVU redshirt freshman by the end of the first period. Delgado then extended his lead to 8-2 by the end of the second with another takedown and a reversal. Delgado went on to defeat Rauser 13-4.
With the loss, Rauser will now head to the wrestlebacks to take on Indiana's Joe Duca (15-17) this evening.
Wilson (22-9), who is making his second straight appearance at the tournament, found himself in the closest first-round matchup of the day for UVU against the All-American from Oklahoma Nick Lester (17-10). With the score still scoreless in the second period, Lester picked up a reversal and followed it up with a questionable two-point nearfall to jump out to a 4-0 lead. The Wolverine senior immediately responded with a reversal of his own to cut the deficit in half, at 4-2. Wilson was then awarded a point for Lester's stalling in the third to make it 4-3 but Lester managed to ride Wilson out in the final period to hold on for the tightly contested 4-3 decision.
Wilson will now have Illinois' Caleb Ervin (22-13) this evening.
Session II of the NCAA Championships will begin tonight at 6:30 p.m. CT/5:30 p.m. MT. Live video can be followed at ESPN3.com while live results can be found at TrackWrestling.com.
