OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University wrestling team showcased their talents for the upcoming 2008-09 season Saturday night at the annual Green and Gold Intra-squad Dual as the Gold team downed the Green 26-15 in the Shurian Family Activity Center.

"Tonight's intra-squad went very well," UVU head wrestling coach Greg Williams said. "It shows us that our depth is definitely coming along. We have some varsity guys that had really close matches against our back-ups. It was a fun night for our crowd and for us it helps us see where we are and what we have to work on for the season."

The night started off with two very tightly contested matches as both of them were decided sudden-death overtime. The Green team took the 3-point advantage from the first match of the night as Brad Darrington (174) was able to beat the Gold teams Ramsey Nijem 7-5. The Gold team followed up by tying the score at 3 as Josh Wilson (149) was able to upend Justin Morrill (149) in a very close match 2-1 match.

Newcomer Akmal Adilov (125) for the Green gave his squad the 6-3 overall advantage as he beat another newcomer for Utah Valley Nick Flores (125) 4-1. Wyatt Ray then tied the score at 6 apiece as he represented the Gold team well picking up a 9-4 decision over Nicko Paraso (125).

In another close match UVU veteran Jeffrey Newby (141) for the Gold team helped them take the control on the scoreboard (9-6) as he beat the transfer from the University of Wyoming Shay Lawrence (141) 6-5. Jeb Clark (165) for the Gold team followed up Newby with a technical fall (18-2) over Alex Sipherd (165), making the score 14-6. Wade Eldredge (157) gave the Green team some life with a fall victory 1:23 seconds into the first round over Jeremy Nixon (157).

Casen Eldredge (184) tried to follow his brother Wade with a win of his own but fell to the newcomer Adam Fager (197) 4-3. In Nijem's second match of the evening he came away with a victory over Diego Avalon (174) 7-2. Wilson also wrestled double-time on the night and picked up his second victory as he defeated Mike Hortman (149) by fall with 38 seconds remaining in the second round.

In the final match of the evening it showcased two team-captains going head-to-head against one another, Benjamin Kjar (125) against Flint Ray (133). Midway through the second round the match was scoreless when Kjar was able to escape a hold of Flint Ray resulting in a 1-0 advantage as they headed into the third round. Right out of the gates in the third Flint Ray escaped from Kjar knotting the match at 1. Kjar then took a hold of Flint Ray's leg with only seconds remaining and took him down with 5 seconds left in the match to win the extremely tight contest 3-1.

"I knew their match would be like that as they know each other so well," Coach Williams added. "Flint is Ben's least favorite person to wrestle but it is good for Ben to have to wrestle him occasionally to help prepare him for Nationals."

UVU will officially begin their season on road next Saturday, Nov. 8 in Powell, Wyoming at the Northwest Open. Then hit the road again for their first dual of the season at the No. 2 ranked team in the nation Iowa State.
