Green Tops Black in Wrestling Intrasquad
Nov. 1, 2012
OREM, Utah -- Fans got their first look at the 2012-13 Utah Valley University wrestling squad Thursday night in an Intrasquad Dual at the PE Building.
"We were glad to get out and see the guys compete," said UVU head wrestling coach Greg Williams. "We saw some things we need to work on, but we also saw some good things. Our older guys looked good and we saw some encouraging things from our younger guys as well. We're pretty excited about this group."
Twenty-one wrestlers, divided into Team Black and Team Green, took to two mats for 12 bouts on the night.
Losing just three matches of the 12, Team Green grabbed a 34-9 win in UVU's final tune-up before opening the regular season this weekend.
Two falls were recorded on the night, one for each team. Redshirt freshman Chase Cuthbertson pinned Andrew Orr in dramatic fashion in a 157-pound match. With under a minute showing on the third period clock and the bout locked at 5-5, Cuthbertson came up with the pin. However, Cuthbertson found himself on the wrong end of a fall, losing by pin to sophomore Napoleon Aniciete after filling in for Orr later in the night.
Bracken Nipko, at 125 pounds, and senior Glenn Terrano, 141 pounds, were the only other Wolverines to wrestle twice on the night, both competing for Black. Nipko made up for an opening-bout loss by major decision to sophomore Colby Christensen with an 11-4 victory over fellow true freshman Josh Metivier.
Redshirt freshman Jade Rauser delivered Black's first points on the night, winning by decision 4-2 over sophomore Chasen Tolbert in a 125-pound match. Jade Rauser's win represented Black's only points on the night until Nipko's decision late in the dual, followed by another 3-0 decision from Val Rauser over fellow redshirt freshman Chris Mayolo.
In that bout, the final of the evening, Val Rauser and Mayolo carried a 0-0 tie into the third period. A two-point reversal from Val Rauser with only 40 seconds remaining propelled the redshirt freshman to a 3-0 decision.
A meeting between redshirt freshmen in the 149-pound division needed overtime to decide a winner. Logan Addis, wearing green, executed a takedown of Tucker Ray with only seconds remaining in the first overtime to take the sudden-victory.
In the 184-pound bout, David Prieto and Derek Thomas also needed overtime after battling to a 1-1 score through three rounds. Thomas earned a point with an escape in the tiebreaker round to pick up another win for Green.
UVU's season officially begins Saturday in Laramie, Wyo., at the Cowboy Open. The Wolverines' will have their first duals of the season the following week at the Campbell University Duals in Buies Creek, N.C. While there, UVU will face host Campbell and Bloomsburg.
