HARRISBURG, Pa./LARAMIE, Wyo. - Utah Valley began its 2011-12 dual season with a split on Saturday at the Wrestle for a Cure Duals in Harrisburg, Pa. There the Wolverines picked up wins over Buffalo (18-12) and Shippensburg (38-6) but fell to two Big Ten member ranked teams in No. 8 Illinois (41-3) and No. 13 Ohio State (36-0).

The win over Buffalo was a big one for the Wolverines, as the Bulls are just out of the rankings and currently receiving votes for the NWCA/USA Today Division I Coaches Poll.

UVU (2-2) freshman 197-pounder Brian Chamberlain led the Wolverines at Wrestle for a Cure as he won three of his four matches. He defeated Shippensburg's Daniel Fultz by fall (2:27), Buffalo's Justin Heisermen by major decision (15-7) and Illinois' Martin Smith by decision (8-2). His lone loss was to the 14th-ranked Andrew Campolattano from Ohio State.

Three other Wolverines won two bouts apiece on the day in 149-pounder Josh Wilson, 165-pounder Ethan Smith and 174-pounder Monte Schmalhaus over foes from Buffalo and Shippensburg. Wilson won one by major decision and the other by decision, while Smith won both his by decision and Schmalhaus won one by forfeit and one by decision. Wilson also wrestled well against 10th-ranked Eric Terrazas of Illinois and 19th-ranked Cam Tessari of Ohio State, falling just 6-3 to Terrazas and 4-1 to Tessari.

Against the Bulls, the Wolverines trailed 9-6 after five matches but UVU rallied to win four of the final five bouts to win the dual 18-12. Against the Division II Raiders, Utah Valley cruised to the 38-6 victory as it won eight of the 10 matches, which included four of them by bonus points. Versus the Buckeyes, UVU wrestled much tougher than the final score showed as it just missed winning five bouts, dropping them all by three points or less.

UVU 125-pounder Colby Christensen, 133-pounder Derek Malan, 141-pounder Avery Garner, 157-pounder Napoleon Aniciete, 184-pounder David Prieto and heavyweight Eric McAllister all also picked up a victory at Wrestle for a Cure.

Also on Saturday UVU had a number of other wrestlers in competition at the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyo. Mostly wrestlers who are redshirting the season for the Wolverines were in action.

UVU heavyweight Dustin Dennison - who was competing unattached at the open - led the way by winning the amateur bracket. Three other Wolverines placed fourth at the tournament as 141-pounder Sam Mecham and 197-pounder Adam Fager (unattached) both finished fourth in the elite tournament and heavyweight Zac Jensen came in fourth in the amateur one.
