Dec. 10, 2011
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - With most of its top wrestlers taking the Colorado Mesa University Open off, Utah Valley still had seven wrestlers place at Saturday's tournament held in Grand Junction, Colo. The Wolverines were led by freshman heavyweight Dustin Dennison and 157-pound freshman Jake Falk (unattached) who both placed second at the open. Redshirt freshman Sam Mecham (141 pounds) and sophomore Trevor Rupp (197) both came in third while redshirt freshman Phillip Sorensen (184) placed fourth, freshman Derek Thomas (184, unattached) placed fifth and sophomore Zac Jensen (hwt.) placed sixth. "The main purpose of this tournament was to get our redshirts and younger guys some matches," said UVU head coach Greg Williams. "We are pleased with some improvements they have made over the last two weeks. We also saw some problems that we need to go back and correct." Second place finishers Dennison and Falk went 2-1 and 3-1 at the open respectively for the Wolverines. Behind them Mecham finished his day at 4-1, Rupp ended 3-1, Sorensen went 2-2, Thomas put up a 1-2 record and Jensen finished 1-3. In all 13 wrestlers either competed for the Wolverines or unattached for them on Saturday.
