2013-14 UVU Wrestling Schedule
OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University wrestling coach Greg Williams released his 2013-14 schedule Thursday and it features duals with four top-25 teams from a year ago and culminates with the hosting of the Western Wrestling Conference Championships.
"I am excited about our upcoming schedule," said Williams. "We have duals with four Pac-12 schools and we were also able to include Nebraska and Central Michigan to our dual schedule this year. Those two programs are consistently top-10 programs in the country."
Besides facing four top-25 teams from last season's final NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll, the Wolverines will also take on four Pac-12 opponents this season as well as a full slate of WWC action.
UVU will begin the season on a two-month-long road trip. The Wolverines first stop will be in Laramie, Wyo., on Nov. 2 for the Cowboy Open. Utah Valley will then head to Michigan for the first time in program history to face Central Michigan on Nov. 14 and Michigan State, Ohio and Gardner-Webb on Nov. 16 at the Eastern Michigan Duals.
The Wolverines will close out the month of November in California's Bay Area to participate at the Stanford Duals in Palo Alto. There, UVU will face the host Cardinal as well as Nebraska and CSU Bakersfield.
In December, Utah Valley will take part in a trio of prestigious tournaments. The Wolverines will spend the month competing at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 6-7, the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 22 and the Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30.
UVU will bring in the New Year by opening its eighth season of competition in the WWC against conference newcomer Grand Canyon on Jan. 9. The Wolverines will then host the seventh annual UVU Open two days later.
The Wolverines' next two duals will be against Pac-12 foes, as they will face Arizona State in Tempe on Jan. 18 and welcome Boise State to the PE Building in Orem on Feb. 1. UVU will then return to conference action to host South Dakota State and North Dakota State on back-to-back nights the following week.
Utah Valley will close out its regular season on a three-dual conference road trip. The Wolverines are set take on Northern Colorado on Feb. 12, Air Force on Feb. 14 and conclude the regular season at the same place they began it with a date against Wyoming on Feb. 15.
UVU will then host the WWC Championships/NCAA West Regional for the first time in program history on March 8. That day, six conference schools will be competing for a conference title as well as trying to qualify as many of their wrestlers as they can for the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships. A year ago the Wolverines tied a program high with three grapplers reaching the NCAA Championships.
"We expect to be very competitive this year and to increase our number of qualifiers for the NCAA Tournament," added Williams. "This schedule will help us prepare to do that."
The NCAA Championships will take place March 20-22 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.
