Wolverines to Begin Dual Season Saturday at Wrestle for a Cure

OREM, Utah - The Wolverine wrestling team will split up the squad this weekend and hit the road as they will head to their first dual action of the season at the Wrestle for a Cure Duals in Harrisburg, Pa., and the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyo.

Both will take place on Saturday and at the Wrestle for a Cure Duals that will be held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center, UVU will face No. 13 Ohio State at 7 a.m., Division II foe Shippensburg at 9 a.m., Buffalo at 3 p.m. and No. 8 Illinois at 5 p.m. The 39th annual Cowboy Open will be held at the War Memorial Fieldhouse and the all day tournament will start at 9 a.m.

It is the second annual Wrestle for a Cure Duals and proceeds from the event will benefit finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Real-time results from the duals can be found by visiting TrackWrestling.com.

Saturday will mark the first all-time meeting between Utah Valley and all four schools that the Wolverines will grapple against in Harrisburg. In all 13 Div. I teams will be competing, while seven more Div. II and III foes will also be in action.

UVU competed in just nine duals a year ago and finished with a 5-4 overall record but this season the Wolverines have 17 duals scheduled.

At the Cowboy Open nearly 20 collegiate teams will bring competitors, including three Western Wrestling Conference rivals in Air Force, Northern Colorado and host Wyoming. In past years, nearly 400 individuals have competed.

Last weekend at the Northwest College Open UVU opened the season strong by winning five individual titles. 141-pounder Avery Garner, 165-pounder Ethan Smith and 174-pounder Monte Schmalhaus all won titles for UVU, while newcomers 125-pounder Jade Rauser and 157-pounder Chase Cuthbertson won their titles while competing unattached from Utah Valley at the open. In all 10 Wolverine grapplers placed at the opening season tournament.

 

 

Following this weekend's competition, UVU will travel to Greeley, Colo., on Nov. 19, to participate at the Old Chicago Open.
