UVU Wrestling Heads to Vegas for CKLV Invite
Nov. 28, 2012
OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University wrestling team will return to action this weekend when it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to take part in the 31st annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
The prestigious tournament will begin Friday at 9 a.m. PT and the action will conclude on Saturday. The finals are slated to begin Saturday at 3 p.m. PT. Live video can be viewed of Saturday's action by visiting FloWrestling.com and results as well as more information can be found at CKLVWrestle.com. This year's invitational is being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The event is traditionally know as one of the biggest and toughest tournaments of the wrestling season and this year is no exception as 32 teams will be in attendance, including 26 Division I members. Of the 26 DI schools, nine are currently ranked in the NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll. In order, they are: No. 5 Ohio State, No. 7 Missouri, No. 8 Cornell, No. 9 Nebraska, No. 14 Michigan, No. 15 Oregon State, No. 17 Virginia, No. 19 Wyoming, and No. 23 Kent State.
All six Western Wrestling Conference schools will also be competing at this weekend's CKLV Invitational.
Last year current senior Josh Wilson led UVU at the tournament as he placed fifth at 149 pounds. Wilson knocked off three ranked grapplers en route to his fifth-place finish, the highest-ever placement by a Wolverine wrestler at the tournament. He ended his impressive CKLV run last year with a 4-2 record.
"This tournament is all about us coming in and beating the guys who are already in the rankings," said head coach Greg Williams. "I think we're ready to go. I like the way the guys are wrestling. This is the most excited I've been as a coach, with the potential and positive attitude that the team has."
The Wolverines are 1-1 in duals this year and have been off since Nov. 11 when they competed at NC State's Wolfpack Open. Wilson led UVU at the Wolfpack Open by winning the 149-pound title. Sophomore Adam Fager placed second in the heavyweight bracket, while twin brothers Jade Rauser and No. 20 Val Rauser took third at 125 pounds and 133 pounds respectively.
Following the CKLV Invitational, UVU will be off for nearly a month. The Wolverines will return to action Dec. 29 and 30 at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill.
