OREM, Utah -- The Utah Valley University women's basketball picked up a win over Adams State Friday night, 85-50, in its lone exhibition contest of the season.
"In an exhibition game you're just trying to see what you have as a team and I think we saw we can do some really good things, but we also saw that we have some things to work on," said 19th-year head coach Cathy Nixon. "There are a few management things we need to get better at, particularly on the defensive end, but those are things I feel confident we can remedy."
Three Wolverines scored in double figures on Friday night, led by 27 points from junior Tina Doughty. Sophomore Katie Kuklok added 19 points while true freshman Rhaiah Spooner-Knight chipped in 10.
Kuklok also pulled in a game-high nine rebounds.
As a team, UVU shot 53 percent from the floor and forced 20 Grizzly turnovers. All 13 players on the 2013-14 roster saw game action with nine appearing in the scoring column.
ASU was led by 14 points from Lena Jaycox and 12 from Alyssa Palma.
"I was pleased with the composure of our team, especially with so many girls who haven't been battle tested yet," said Nixon. "But they displayed a calm demeanor and I felt that same confidence coaching them tonight."
Utah Valley will have a week to prepare for its regular season opener when Nevada rolls into Orem next Friday. That contest tips of at 4 p.m. in the UCCU Center and will precede the men's basketball season-opener against IUPUI at 7 p.m.
Be sure to catch Coach Nixon on the Wolverine Coaches Show Monday at 2 p.m. on 960 The Zone. She and men's head coach Dick Hunsaker will be live on air to preview the upcoming UVU basketball season.
