Jenkins, Jensen and Mansfield Lead UVU Women to Exhibition Win
Nov. 3, 2012
OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University women's basketball team responded from an earlier exhibition loss with a 71-55 tune-up win over Adams State Saturday afternoon in Orem.
"Our commitment to an intensity on the defensive end was solid today. We weren't perfect but especially our first five played well defensively and got us off to a good start," said head coach Cathy Nixon. "We learned a lot between Wednesday and now. Sometimes it takes getting a little wake up call to jump start you and that's what these exhibition games are for."
With UVU trailing by one three minutes into the contest, the Wolverines went on a 15-0 run to take a 21-7 advantage. Senior Cydne Gray sparked the rally with five points during the spurt.
The Wolverines would later held a 36-23 lead with 4:40 to go in the opening period of play but back came the Grizzlies with a 9-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to just four (34-32). Jenkins added a late layup and a sophomore Ashley Klemz followed with a three-ball before the half to give the Wolverines a 41-33 advantage at intermission.
Utah Valley stretched its lead to 18, at 53-35, six minutes into the second half after a 12-3 run. A three-pointer from sophomore Tina Doughty later extended UVU's advantage to 63-41 with 8:55 to play. The 22-point advantage would be the Wolverines' largest of the ballgame.
Adams State, a Division II school that plays in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), hung around and pulled to within 13 with five minutes to go but UVU managed to hold onto its advantage down the stretch to take the exhibition contest by 16 points.
Behind Jenkins, Jensen and Mansfield's performances, senior Alle Finch Cardwell had a nice game as well with nine points and nine assists. As a team UVU outshot the Grizzlies 42.6 to 36.0 percent from the field and 50.0 to 35.3 percent from distance.
Four players finished in double figures for Adams State and Tessie Pikula, Deanne Reich and Keyondra White all tallied 11 points apiece. Marissa Peterson followed with 10.
The contest marked UVU's final tune-up as the Wolverines will officially begin their 2012-13 season Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m. at home against the Boise State Broncos. That game will be played in the PE Building (formerly know as the Activity Center). UVU will stay home and welcome in-state rival Utah State to the UCCU Center on Monday, Nov. 12.
