LONG BEACH, Calif. - Utah Valley hung around with Long Beach State for 30 minutes in its season opener Friday night in Southern California but a late 29-8 run propelled the 49ers to a 75-43 victory.
UVU (0-1) senior Jenna Johnson led the Wolverines in the game with 14 points on 6-12 shooting, while junior Sammie Jensen also topped double digits in points with 11. Junior Erika Newbold -- in her first game in nearly 20 months -- finished with eight boards, which tied sophomore Kim Bell for the team lead.
The Wolverines played well in the early stages and after a Johnson 3-ball took a quick 8-3 advantage. After another Johnson jumper, UVU later maintained its five-point lead, at 10-5, with 14:23 to go in the opening half. Back came the 49ers (1-0) however as they rolled off a 10-1 rally to take a 15-11 lead.
A Kaycee Mansfield three-pointer and two Abbie Beutler free throws later gave the Wolverines back the lead, at 16-15, but it was the last lead that UVU would take the rest of the night.
With three minutes left in the first half UVU trailed by just four at 25-21, but a late 8-3 Long Beach State spurt would give the 49ers a 33-24 intermission lead.
In the second half UVU hung around with LBSU for the first few minutes but the large 49er run proved costly as the Wolverines suffered the defeat.
Ella Clark led the 49ers in scoring with a game-high 16 points. LBSU's Tipesa Morrer finished with a double-double night with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Wolverines will return to Orem for their home opener next Saturday, Nov. 19, against Idaho State. Monday's (Nov. 14) previously scheduled home opener against Walla Walla University has been postponed until Jan. 17.
