Five student-athletes recognized as Perry Homes Scholar Athletes

OREM, Utah - Five student-athletes were recognized as Perry Homes Scholar Athletes of the Month at Tuesday's Wolverine Club Luncheon on the campus of Utah Valley University. The Perry Homes Scholar Athlete of the Month award recognizes not only athletic prowess, but also dedication and commitment in the classroom. The student-athletes recognized Tuesday are: wrestling's Chase Cuthbertson (November), Whitney Jenkins of women's basketball and Holton Hunsaker of men's basketball (December), and track and field's Wendy Peterson and Logan Rusch (January).

Redshirt sophomore Chase Cuthbertson of wrestling has not only been excelling in the classroom during his time at UVU but also on the mat. The Scottsboro, Ala., native put up a perfect 4.0 GPA last semester while holding a 3-4 win-loss record on the season. Chase, who currently has a 3.61 cumulative GPA in accounting and is 1-1 on the mat this month, picked up his biggest win of the season in November when he knocked off Ohio's Spartak Chino, who was ranked 16th in the nation at the time by a score of 14-12.

Hailing from Salt Lake City, Whitney Jenkins is one of two senior leaders on this season's women's basketball team and was voted a team captain prior to the start of the year. Majoring in health education, Whitney is coming off a strong week of play during which she averaged 10 points and four rebounds per game against Idaho and Seattle U. A three-year starter for Coach Nixon, Whitney has compiled a 3.83 cumulative GPA and a 3.85 GPA last term.

 

 

Senior Holton Hunsaker is an accounting major with a 3.88 cumulative GPA. The North Salt Lake City native is a finalist for the men's basketball Senior CLASS award and currently leads the WAC in assists (4.3 apg) and the Wolverines in scoring (12.0 ppg). Last season he was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 Team, the Division I-AAA ADA Scholar-Athlete Team and the Great West Conference All-Academic Team. Following the season he received the Great West's top honor, the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his success on and off the court.

Junior Wendy Peterson not only placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.42 seconds at Idaho State over the weekend but she also compiled a flawless 4.0 GPA last semester. The Orem native holds a 3.93 cumulative GPA in exercise science during her tenure at UVU was named Academic All-Conference a season ago. Wendy also had a solid opening-season meet at Boise State last month where she took fourth in the 60-meter dash and fifth in the 200.

Sophomore Logan Rusch of track & field recently placed fourth in the men's 400-meter dash at Idaho State over the weekend with a time of 50.52 seconds. Rusch currently holds a near-perfect 3.96 cumulative GPA in exercise science and put up a 3.94 GPA last semester. The Clinton, Utah, native also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash at Boise State last month and sixth in the 400.
