Women's basketball makes southern swing this week
Feb. 13, 2013
OREM, Utah -- The first-place Utah Valley University women's basketball team heads out on a two-game road trip this week that will take the team to New Orleans on Thursday before a trip to Texas-Pan American Saturday evening.
The Wolverines (10-13) moved to 4-1 in the Great West Conference with a win over NJIT last week to avenge the team's only league loss so far this season.
Sammie Jensen returned to the lineup after a two-game absence and showed no signs of rust, going for 14 points and 17 rebounds. UVU got a game-high 16 from Tina Doughty, while Kaycee Mansfield and Whitney Jenkins chipped in 11 and 10, respectively, to win going away, 64-47.
Jensen's 15 double-doubles matches her output from her first two seasons at UVU and ranks 10th nationally. She's averaging 13.0 rebounds per game, which ranks third in the country, and first in the Great West and her 17.0 ppg is tied atop the league with HBU's Shanice Steenholdt.
Doughty earned GWC Player of the Week honors on Tuesday after averaging 21.5 points per game last week for UVU and hitting 11 threes. The Wolverine sophomore also set a new single-game school record with eight trifectas, on 8-of-10 shooting from distance, in a 60-point win over Walla Walla last week.
About New Orleans
Keri Thomas leads UNO with 14.4 points per game. Mathilde Fogelstrom is tops on the club in rebounding with 7.8 rpg.
Thursday's game will mark the first all-time meeting between UVU and UNO. The Privateers are scheduled to make the return trip to Utah Valley next season.
