OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University women's basketball team will showcase its talents for the first time in 2011-12 Wednesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Western New Mexico in its lone exhibition contest.
UVU, who finished last year with an 8-21 overall record and a 5-7 Great West Conference clip, returns all five of its starters and 10 letterwinners from a year ago. The five starters returning include senior guards Abbie Beutler and Jenna Johnson, junior forwards Kaycee Mansfield and the reining Great West Newcomer of the Year Sammie Jensen and junior center Erika Newbold, who missed the entire 2010-11 campaign with a broken foot.
Head coach Cathy Nixon returns for her 17th year at the helm of Wolverine women's basketball to make her UVU's longest tenured coach. Besides having a number of returners this season, Nixon will also welcome five talented newcomers to the mix in freshmen Jessica Bachynski, Taylor Huber, Ashley Klemz and transfers Tina Doughty (New Mexico) and Alle Finch (Snow College). Although Finch will be eligible for the 2011-12 season, Doughty will have to sit out the year due to NCAA transfer regulations.
Western New Mexico is a Division II member that plays its ball in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). The Mustangs were recently projected to finish last in the RMAC Preseason Poll as they picked up just one victory last year (1-25, 1-21 RMAC).
Following Wednesday's exhibition, UVU will prepare for its first regular season contest that will take place at Long Beach State on Nov. 11. The Wolverines first home game will then come on Nov. 14, when Walla Walla University comes to town.
