Utah Valley Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen has announced the hiring of new women's golf coach David DeSantis. DeSantis comes to Utah Valley University with over 30 years of experience coaching and teaching golf. He becomes just the second head women's coach at UVU with the Wolverines set to begin their fourth season of competition this fall. "I'm pleased to have David's become a part of our program here at Utah Valley University," said Jacobsen. "As we have now reached university status and announced our affiliation with the Great West Conference, it's a wonderful time to be at UVU and we look forward to David being a big part of our future success," "I'm really excited to be at Utah Valley and to be able to coach this team," said DeSantis. "The most satisfying thing about coaching is working with the players and helping them improve and I'm really looking forward to that opportunity. Being affiliated with the Great West Conference gives us something to shoot for; a conference championship. We want to compete for that championship every year." DeSantis comes to Orem after spending six-plus seasons as an assistant coach at nearby BYU, where he also played during his collegiate career and helped the Cougars to the 1981 national championship. Two years earlier, in 1979, DeSantis was named an NCAA All-American. He graduated from BYU with a degree in Business Management. Following his college career, DeSantis played professionally in PGA, Nike, Golden State and Canadian Tour events and has been a Class A member of the PGA of America since 1991. "David will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to our program," said Director of Golf and Clark Rustand. "His ability to make young players better and his ties to the community over the past 30 years are really going to help this program reach the next level." DeSantis has coached or taught golf around the state in several capacities including serving as the head golf professional at Palisade State Park Golf Course in Sterling, Utah and River Oaks Golf Course in Sandy, Utah. During his time at BYU, DeSantis saw the women's program improve from a national ranking of 65 all the way to the 13th ranked team in the country. In 2006 the National Golf Coaches Association named him the National Assistant Coach of the Year. DeSantis and his wife Holly, also a former collegiate golfer at BYU, are the parents of five daughters (Adair, Adriane, Elizabeth, Katie and Annie) and one son (William). They are also the proud grandparents of two grandsons and one granddaughter. |
