Wolverines in seventh after 18 holes at WAC Championships

MESA, Ariz. - The Utah Valley University women's golf team finds itself in seventh place after 18 holes of golf at the 2014 Western Athletic Conference Championships. The tournament will continue on Saturday with another round of 18 at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.

Despite being in seventh place at 49-over par, UVU is just five shots out of fourth place. Idaho leads the field at 14-over par, while New Mexico State is in second (+21), Seattle U third (+35), Kansas City fourth (+44), Texas-Pan American fifth (+46), Chicago State sixth (+47) and Bakersfield rounds out the field at 69-over.

Freshman Monica Yeates led the way for the Wolverines on the day as she is currently tied for 21st at 11-over par (83). Redshirt freshman Kimberly Nyhus and junior Heather Mathison are just one stroke back of Yeates as the two both carded 84's on Friday (+12). Nyhus and Mathison will enter Friday's second round tied for 23rd place.

Juniors Hannah Herman and Brooke Whittaker round out Utah Valley's field of five as they fired respective scores of 86 and 92 during Friday's opening round. Herman's 86 is good enough for 33rd place while Whittaker's 92 currently puts her in 42rd.

Idaho's Leilanie Kim leads the tournament at 1-over par after she carded a 73 on Friday, while Grand Canyon's Charlotte Jaengkit, who is playing as an individual, is in second at 2-over (74).



Saturday's second round will get underway at 7 a.m. in Arizona and will feature live scoring at GolfStat.com. The final 18 will then be played on Sunday.
