LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Utah Valley University women's golf team sits in 14th place after one round of play at New Mexico State's Price's Give `Em Five Intercollegiate on Monday. The Wolverines will continue play at the three-day/54-hole tournament on Tuesday with 18 more holes of golf.
UVU sits in 14th place after carding a 30-over par 318 on Monday. The Wolverines find themselves just eight shots back of 13th-place UTEP and 12 back of 12th-place North Texas. UC Irvine leads the tournament at 2-over par while Portland State is in second place, just one shot back of the top spot.
Junior Brooke Whittaker leads the Wolverines at the tournament as she sits in a tie for 41st place after shooting a 5-over 77. Fellow junior Lynn-Marié Nagel and sophomore Cassandra Lesa also played well for UVU on Monday as they both finished with identical scores of 6-over 78 to place them in a tie for 47th.
Lesa led Utah Valley in birdies on the day with two, while Nagel and Whittaker each recorded one apiece. Whittaker is the Wolverines' leader after shooting 12 pars, four bogeys and the one birdie.
Also in action at the tournament for UVU is redshirt freshman Kimberly Nyhus and junior Hannah Herman. Nyhus finds herself in a tie for 74th after carding a 13-over 85 during the first round while Herman sits in 77th at +15 (87).
Fellow WAC foe New Mexico State is hosting the tournament for the 14th time at the NM State Golf Course in Las Cruces. The par 72 course is being played at 6,258 yards.
Portland State's A Ram Choi is leading the tournament at 4-under par.
The tournament marks UVU's first competition in three weeks after it finished ninth at Boise State's Bronco Fall Classic on Sept. 16-17.
Tuesday's second round of the Price's Give `Em Five Intercollegiate will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Wednesday's final round will also initiate with a shotgun start at the same time.
