Women's golf opens spring season Monday in Arizona

OREM, Utah - After taking a break from action during the winter months, the Utah Valley University women's golf team will resume play Monday and Tuesday at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Litchfield Park, Ariz. The tournament will mark UVU's first time hitting the course in nearly four months.

The GCU Invitational will consist of 54 holes that will be contested at the Wigwam Resort Gold Golf Course. On Monday 36 holes of golf will be played while on Tuesday a final round of 18 take place. Action will begin at 8:15 a.m. MT each day with a shotgun start.

The Wolverines will be one of 14 schools that will compete at the two-day tourney. Three of the 14 teams will come from the Western Athletic Conference while three more call the state of Utah home. Along with UVU and GCU, fellow WAC foe Bakersfield will also join the field while the Wolverines will also go up against in-state rivals Southern Utah and Weber State during the tournament. Creighton, Idaho State, McNeese State, Montana State, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota State, Northern Arizona, Northern Kentucky and Santa Clara will also all be a part of the field.

Seven golfers will take part at the Invitational for Utah Valley with juniors Brooke Whittaker and Hannah Herman, sophomore Cassandra Lesa and freshmen Kimberly Nyhus and Monica Yeates making up the five member team and junior Heather Mathison and sophomore Kalea Heu playing as individuals.

Whittaker paces the team in scoring average as she put up a 77.15 in the fall. She also holds the season's lowest round by shooting a 70 in her victory at Weber State in late August. The junior golfer also paces the squad in birdies with 24 and eagles with one.

Following the Grand Canyon Invitational, UVU will remain in Arizona for NAU's Red Rocks Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (March 1-2) in Sedona.
