NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The Great West Conference has announced its 2012-13 Winter/Spring Academic All-Conference honors for the sports baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, and women's golf. The list features 49 Utah Valley University student-athletes -- the most of any GWC institution.

Twenty-one members of the women's track and field teams made the cut, as did seven more from both men's track and field and women's basketball, six from baseball, five from women's golf, and three from men's basketball.

Leading the honorees are five athletes who have achieved 4.0 grade point averages, headlined by Utah Valley's track athlete Sally Hansen. Joining Hansen are Houston Baptist women's basketball player Devyn Weymouth, NJIT track athlete Jonathan Daudelin, North Dakota baseball player Trent Egan, Northern Colorado baseball player Ben Packard.

In all, 152 Great West student-athletes were named to the team based on a minimum 3.2 grade point average. The athletes also must have participated in at least 50 percent of their respective team's contests.

Making up the academic team are 50 women's track and field athletes, 35 representatives of men's track and field, 37 baseball players, 15 women's basketball players, nine women's golfers, and six men's basketball players.

Using the institutions' most recent GPA, the student-athletes are selected by each member institution's sports information director, with approval from the faculty athletic representative and the head coach. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

"I applaud these Great West student-athletes who have made an effort to balance academics and athletics," GWC Commissioner Ed Grom said. "It is difficult enough to perform in the classroom with the outside influence of today's society, but these student-athletes have proven they can dedicate the hours and hours of time needed to also perform at the Division I level. I am truly amazed by those who have achieved all-conference honors while also maintaining the high GPA in their major of choice. Congratulations to all 152 honorees and best of luck in the future."
