MIDWAY, Utah -- Utah Valley University golfer Brooke Bliss Whittaker advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Utah Women's State Amateur Championship on Wednesday by defeating Randi Stephens at the Wasatch Mountain State Park Golf Course in match play.
Bliss Whittaker, who entered match play as the 11-seed, was the lone Wolverine to advance to the quarters as she knocked off the sixth-seeded Stephens in the Round of 16 by a score of 1-up. The UVU junior from St. George, Utah, and Stephens entered the 18th hole tied but Bliss Whittaker came through in the clutch as she took the final hole to win the match play.
Bliss Whittaker then matched up with third-seeded Sirene Blair in the quarterfinals later in the day. In a tightly contested battle between the two golfers, Blair edged Bliss Whittaker in 19 holes. Neither golfer went up by more than one throughout the matchup.
Bliss Whittaker found herself trailing Blair by one after the 16th hole but promptly won the 17th to tie the contest as the two headed to the final hole. After the two tied on 18, Blair took the contest by winning the 19th, by a shot.
Blair, who won a share of top medalist honors in the stroke play rounds by shooting a 142 (70-72), will begin her collegiate career at San Diego State this fall.
In all, Bliss Whittaker shot 2-under par in 37 holes of action on Wednesday.
Also in action for UVU in the Round of 16 on Wednesday were sophomore Kalea Heu and junior Hannah Herman. Heu dropped her match to top-seed Kelsey Chugg, last year's champion, 3-and-2 while Herman fell to Blair, 5-and-4.
The Utah Women's State Am will conclude on Thursday. The semis will take place in the morning while the final round will be played that afternoon.
