OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University women's golf team will host its lone tournament of the 2013-14 season Monday and Tuesday at Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville, Utah. The Hobble Creek Invitational will tee off Monday morning at 8:30 a.m.

Thirteen teams and a total of 75 golfers will compete in the two-day tournament.

"We are very excited about the opportunity to be able to host and play the tournament at Hobble Creek. It's a great golf course," head coach Sue Nyhus said. "Our girls have made some significant improvements over the summer and they're really looking forward to playing in front of the hometown crowd."

The Wolverines will face competition from all four other in-state teams at the tournament in BYU (who is co-hosting the tournament with UVU), Southern Utah, Weber State and Dixie State as well as WAC foes Bakersfield, Grand Canyon and New Mexico State. Also in attendance at the invitational will be Cal State Northridge, Gonzaga, Idaho State, San Francisco and Santa Clara.

The golfers will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. Tuesday's final round will begin at 8 a.m. and par will be 71 for all three rounds. Live scoring for the entire tournament can be found at Golfstat.com and all eight of UVU's golfers will be in action at the tournament.

Utah Valley will enter the tournament on the heels of its first Division I win in program history as it won the Wildcat Invitational at the Davis Park Golf Course in Kaysville, Utah, on Aug. 30. As a team the Wolverines bested Weber State, who was playing on its home course, in the 18-hole tournament by two strokes by shooting a 296. Southern Utah finished in third with a 305 and Idaho State took fourth (326).

Junior Brooke Whittaker also notched her first career tournament victory at the Wildcat Invitational by firing a 1-under-par 70. Whittaker finished two strokes ahead of Weber State's Kristie Jensen and Emily Podlesny who tied for second. Fellow UVU junior Heather Mathison placed fourth with a 2-over 73, while sophomore Kalea Heu rounded out the top 10 by tying for eighth with a 5-over 76.

Redshirt freshman Kimberly Nyhus and true freshman Monica Yeates, who were both playing as individuals at the Wildcat Invitational, also played well in the opening tournament as they placed fifth and seventh respectively. Nyhus tied for fifth with a 3-over 74 while Yeates came in seventh with a 4-over 75.

"It was wonderful to have the scores that we had at the Wildcat Invitational. The individual win by Brooke was something you could see coming and finally her skills met the opportunity," added Nyhus. "It's just a stepping-stone. We have many stepping-stones in our program to cross over and that was a big one. Now that we've crossed the line by winning our first collegiate event, we're going to give it our best shot to continue our winning ways."

Following the Hobble Creek Invite, the Wolverines will head to Kuna, Idaho, to take part at Boise State's Bronco Fall Classic the following week (Sept. 16-17).
