OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University women's soccer team showcased its talents for the first time in 2013 Saturday evening at Clyde Field with a pair of exhibitions - the Green and White Game and the Alumni Game. In the opener, Team White took care of business against Team Green with a 2-0 victory, while in the nightcap the 2013 Wolverines played to a 1-1 draw against the Alumni.
"It was good to have the team out here competing in front of the fans tonight. It added a little bit of a competitive edge that we haven't seen in our practices yet," said UVU head coach Brent Anderson. "I would've loved to have seen a couple of our injured players get out on the field as well but that's just how things go. Overall I thought that we looked pretty good but I also a few things that we'll work on this upcoming week to help prepare us for our season opener."
Senior Haley Curtis led the way in the Green and White Game with a goal and an assist, while sophomore Jamie Brown scored two goals on the evening with one in each game.
Brown got the White Team on the board early on in the Green and White Game as she found the back of the net in the fourth minute. Curtis set the goal up with an assist on the play.
Curtis then gave the White Team a 2-0 advantage in the final minute of the opening half. Senior Natalie Baker was credited with the assist as she pushed the ball toward the net and Curtis finished it off.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Sack, who was recently named to the WAC's Preseason All-Conference squad, held the Green Team scoreless in the contest with solid play around the net.
In the Alumni Game, Brown picked up her second goal of the evening in the eighth minute as she found the back of the net on a beautiful pass from senior Lexi Dunn.
The 2013 Wolverines then held a one-goal advantage until the closing seconds of the match. With time about to expire, the Alumni Team evened the score when former UVU standout Katey Turner received a through pass around the goal and she didn't disappoint as she drilled the back of the net just as time expired.
"I loved the Alumni Game. We've got some great alumni," added Anderson. "I think we had a good interaction with our alumni, our current players and our parents. It was definitely a successful event."
Not only did fans get a chance to see the 2013 Wolverines display their talents for the first time on Saturday but they also got their first look at the brand new bleachers at Clyde Field that were finished less than a week ago. The new seating will now house over 1,000 spectators for future soccer matches at UVU.
The 2013 Wolverines, who were recently picked to finish second in their first season of play in the WAC, will now prepare for their season opener at UTEP on Friday, Aug. 23. UVU's opening home match will then come the following week when Weber State visits Clyde Field on Aug. 29.
