Late Game-Tying Goal Erased in UV Loss
Oct. 12, 2007
FARGO, N.D. - Utah Valley had a goal taken away in the 88th minute on a controversial call as the Wolverines fell 1-0 to North Dakota State. Lauren Bluth received an entry pass in the box that she redirected to the net. Originally scored a goal, UV lined up for a kickoff only to find out the Bison were awarded a free kick as the call was changed to a hand ball. "The result of this game is unfortunate," UV head coach Brent Anderson said. "I am not happy with the score of the game but I am very happy with the way our girls played. The girls displayed a renewed energy and commitment on the field today." Playing arguably their best game of the season, the Wolverines fired eight shots on goal in the game, just one behind the Bison's nine. Utah Valley was led by Jenni Clough who fired six shots, four on goal. Adrienne Schneider and Andi Bagdan each added two shots for the Wolverines. Both teams put pressure on the opposing goalkeepers in the first half. The Bison fired nine shots while the Wolverines got five away in the first half. Utah Valley got four of its five first half shots on goal while North Dakota State tested UV's Schott six times. The scoring opportunities were plentiful in the first 10 minutes, with each team firing several shots on goal. The Bison found the net 10 minutes into the half when Michelle Martinez took a pass from Quin Ryan and found the net to go ahead, 1-0. The game remained at 1-0 throughout the first half as each of the Wolverines shots found the NDSU keeper. With just over one minute remaining before intermission, the Bison came close but had a shot hit off the crossbar.
In the second half, Utah Valley kept the offensive pressure on, firing several shots in the early going and testing the Bison's goalkeeper. The Wolverines fired more shots on goal (four) than North Dakota State (three) in the second stanza. In the 83rd minute, Clough and Bagdan almost broke through to score as Clough fired a shot that was deflected to Bagdan who let loose a shot on goal that was saved. "We played extremely well in the last 25 minutes," Anderson said. "I'm proud that the girls stayed focused after they (North Dakota State) scored their first goal." Up next the Wolverines head to South Dakota State to take on the Jacks Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. |
