Wright Goal Lifts UV Past SUU 3-2 in OT
Oct. 21, 2006 Cedar City, UT- The Utah Valley State soccer picked up a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over Southern Utah on Saturday. The win ups the Wolverines record to 6-9-1 while SUU dropped to 5-8-2. "The girls just decided to come out and play," Utah Valley State coach Brent Anderson said. "It was a very physical game. We showed determination to win and the girls kept playing the entire game." Utah Valley trailed 2-1 with under a minute to play in regulation. But just when it looked as if SUU had the game won, freshman Natalie Hatfield scored with 35 seconds left in regulation off passes from Brittany Call and Kasey Turley to send the game into overtime. "Natalie was playing well," Anderson said. "She got herself in good position to finish it off." Hatfield's goal was the only goal scored in the second half. SUU held a 2-1 lead at halftime. The T-Birds jumped on the scoreboard first in the 10th minute. Courtney Robbins then tied the game for the Wolverines in the 21st minute when she dribbled the ball around three defenders and fired a shot that went under the keepers legs from 10-yards out. SUU took the lead at 2-1 two minutes later on a goal from Dani Lavigne. In the overtime period, Jenni Wright scored two minutes in on a flick pass from Robbins to give Utah Valley the victory. "Before overtime the girls said, `We can't drag this out. Lets finish this right away,'" Anderson said. "Today we took advantage of the opportunities we created, where in the past we haven't. Every girl did their job today." Utah Valley now holds a 3-0 lead in the series with SUU. Utah Valley closes out the regular season with a game at Loyola Marymount on October 26.
