Soccer Moves Into Championship With 4-0 Win
Nov. 1, 2008
FARMVILLE, Virginia - Jenni Clough and Jaime Lyons had a goal and an assist each as Utah Valley will get a chance to repeat as United Soccer Champions by virtue of its 4-0 shutout of NJIT in the conference semifinal on Saturday. The Wolverines (11-6-1) scored three first-half goals en route to the win in which UVU outshot the Highlanders (2-16-1) 12-1 in shots on goal and 20-2 overall. "I'm very happy. This was a great team effort," said head coach Brent Anderson. "The girls wanted to come out and prove a point that we were better than the 2-1 game at NJIT earlier this year and it was just a very good team effort. We played everybody and didn't miss a beat when we put different people in different positions and that's very valuable." Adrienne Schneider scored what is her third game-winning goal of the season in the 10th minute on an assist from Athena Maher to put Utah Valley up 1-0. Jennifer Lohner scored the second goal just over three minutes later, in the 13th minute, when Clough brought the ball down the right side and slipped the ball past the diving goalkeeper and Lohner finished it off into the left corner. Clough's six goal of the season, and 26th of her career, came in the 37th minute on a pass from Lyons. Lyons then picked up the final goal of the game in the 64th minute when she rebounded her own shot and put it back with her left foot. Mallory Schott and Kelley Thompson each played one half in goal for Utah Valley, with Thompson logging the only save on the only shot on goal for NJIT.
The Wolverines will now face host Longwood on Monday at 5:30 p.m. ET. It will be a rematch of last season's championship match, won 3-2 by Utah Valley in Orem. The Wolverines also won a home match up earlier this season against Longwood, 3-0. The Lancers moved into the championship after their 3-0 win over Howard on Saturday night. |
