2013 UVU Women's Soccer Schedule
OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley University women's soccer released its 2013 schedule Friday. The Wolverines will play eight home matches during the regular season and a full Western Athletic Conference slate.
Also featured in the 2013 edition are two meetings with 2012 NCAA tournament qualifiers in Utah State and Idaho State.
"I think we have put together a great 2013 schedule," said head coach Brent Anderson. "We have some high quality opponents on tap, and it's a schedule that, considering the experience we have returning in some key positions, I expect to see good results from this season."
UVU will see an array of familiar faces on the other side of the pitch in 2013 as the Wolverines went toe-to-toe with nine of their 13 upcoming opponents last season. The regular season will kickoff in the same manner it did last year, with UVU and UTEP squaring off in the season opener. The Wolverines will look to repay the Miners for a 2-1 home loss in Orem last season as they travel to West Texas on Aug. 23.
"In fact, five of our first seven matches are against opponents that we lost to last season," continued Anderson. "We will find out very quickly how much we've developed and how strong we are compared to last year's squad."
From there, UVU will face its only in-state opponents on the year in its next two contests. The Wolverines travel to Logan on Aug. 26 for a date with Utah State, a squad that has reached the NCAA tournament each of the last two years, before playing its home opener at Clyde Field against Weber State on Aug. 29.
Beginning Sept. 3, UVU will venture into Big Sky country for a three game road trip -- its longest of the season. A visit to Idaho State, last season's Big Sky Conference tournament champions and an NCAA tournament qualifier, in Pocatello begins the road swing, and is followed by a pair of matches at the Montana Cup. While in Missoula, the Wolverines will reunite with former Great West Conference rival Houston Baptist, now of the Southland Conference, on Sept. 7 before tangling with the University of Montana for the third straight season.
The non-conference slate then comes to an end as UVU returns to Orem on Sept. 15 for a meeting with UC Davis of the Big West. It will be the first meeting between the Wolverines and Aggies since the 2008 season.
Utah Valley women's soccer will officially usher in the WAC era for UVU on Sept. 20 when CSU Bakersfield visits Clyde Field. It will be the first official WAC contest across all Wolverine sports and commences the 12-game WAC soccer schedule.
A return leg to Bakersfield on Sept. 22 followed by a trip to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon gives way to the longest homestand of the season for the Wolverines. UVU will host four straight WAC fixtures, welcoming Idaho, Seattle, Kansas City, and New Mexico State to Clyde Field. The Wolverines met both Idaho and Seattle last season, but will be meeting UMKC and NM State for the first time in program history.
UVU will play four of its final five games on the road, sandwiching its last home match of the year against GCU on Oct. 25 between a pair of road trips. The away legs against UI and SU take place Oct. 18 and 20, while the regular season wraps up with visits to NM State and UMKC on Nov. 1 and 3.
"I expect our tough pre-conference matches to prepare us for the WAC competition," Anderson said. "We are happy to have this opportunity to compete in the WAC and we understand that the level of competition is elevated. I expect us to respond positively to that challenge."
The Wolverines will return to Las Cruces, N.M., six days later for the opening rounds of the WAC tournament, beginning Nov. 7. There, UVU will have its first-ever opportunity to compete for an automatic bid into the NCAA postseason.
