LAS VEGAS -- Utah Valley University opened the three-day Easton Desert Classic with an 8-1 loss to Big West foe Long Beach State on Friday night. The Wolverines took an early 1-0 lead, but saw their bats kept in check from that point forward behind the stout pitching effort of the 49ers' Erin Jones-Wesley.
After a scoreless first, the Wolverines used a couple second-inning doubles to open the scoring. Amanda Robinson led off the inning with a two-bagger into left, eventually coming home to score when Brittney Vansway duplicated the feat. It was the first career extra-base hit for Vansway, a freshman from Irvine, Calif., not to mention her first career RBI.
That run was all UVU (0-6) would manufacture in the inning, but it gave the Wolverines their first lead of the 2014 season with a 1-0 advantage heading into the third inning.
"We came out hard in the beginning of the game and the girls definitely have the right mentality," said Utah Valley head coach Nikki Palmer. "The team did an excellent job of staying positive and confident throughout the game which will provide us some good momentum heading into the rest of the weekend."
The lead was short-lived, though, as the 49ers (4-3) got a big blast in the top of the third. With two gone and a runner on first, Ashley Holmes put LBSU out in front with her third home run of the season.
That slim 2-1 lead was all that Long Beach State would need as Jones-Wesley went to work. The senior threw a complete-game, two-hitter and struck out 11 Wolverines along the way. In picking up her first win of the season, Jones-Wesley held UVU hitless for Friday's last five innings.
A couple three-run innings late in the contest from the 49ers, including another two-out home run in the top of the 5th, settled the final score line as Josi Summers took the loss for Utah Valley. The junior threw 5.0 innings before Dara Rahm made her second career appearance in relief, ending the game with 2.0 innings pitched and a couple strikeouts.
The Wolverines continue the Easton Desert Classic on Saturday with their first doubleheader of the weekend. UVU faces Toledo for the first time in program history at 4:45 p.m. MT, before it takes the field against host UNLV at 7 p.m. Live stats for both games can be accessed through the softball schedule page at WolverineGreen.com.
