DALLAS -- Kyli Flanary picked up her first win of the season Saturday by twirling a complete-game one-hitter in leading Utah Valley to a 4-0 victory over South Dakota in the first game of a doubleheader at the Great West Conference softball cluster.
In the nightcap, the Wolverines completed the sweep when Meghan Yocom homered with two outs in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie in leading UVU to the 2-1 win.
In Game 1, Amanda Perez provided all the run support Flannary would need with a solo homer in the second inning. The Wolverines, however, added a run in the third on an RBI single by Deianna Russell and two more in the sixth on a two-run homer by Yocom.
Flanary, who struck out four, allowed her only hit in the top of the second inning.
The Wolverines pounded out nine hits with Yocom tallying three, while Maggie Christianson added two hits.
In Game 2, Josi Summers allowed just one run - and it came in the first - on two hits in earning the win.
"You have to give both pitchers (Flanary and Summers) a lot of credit today," UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne said. "Both defensively and offensively we made plays when we needed to make plays."
For the day, Yocom was 5-for-7 with two homers and a double.
"Great players step up at critical times and make plays and that's what Yocom did today," Fairbourne said.
With the win, the Wolverines, who have won three of their last four games, improve to 5-13 on the year.
the Wolverines are back in action Sunday with a doubleheader with North Dakota beginning at 9 a.m.
