Wolverines Drop Senior Day Contest to San Jose State
April 26, 2012
OREM, Utah - Two first inning home runs by Utah Valley University erased an early 4-0 deficit but San Jose State University capitalized on five Wolverine (27-20-1) errors and went on to defeat UVU on Senior Day in Orem, 10-6.
"We can be so good and we can be so bad. The kids need to learn to manage themselves," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "They can't come out and go through the motions and hope for things to happen. The girls need to learn to play with a sense of urgency."
The Spartans (26-21) took advantage of two UVU first inning errors by putting a four spot on the board to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. The Wolverine immediately bounced back with two home runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 4-all. Jessica Uresti led off the frame and lined one over the fence in right-center to make it a 4-1 contest. Three batters later Krystin Jachim then belted a three-run home run to left-center to tie the game.
The ball continued to fly out of Wolverine Field in the second as SJSU's Breanna Lopez hit a three-run opposite field home run to put the Spartans back on top at 7-4.
SJSU then bounced back with a run of its own in the fourth but UVU then managed to score another solo run in the last of that frame as Jachim picked up anothern RBI on a groundout to make it a 8-6 game.
The Spartans then tacked on two late insurance runs as they went on to pull out the contest, 10-6.
Cassie Herrera (8-6) started in the circle for the Wolverines and allowed five earned runs (nine total) in six innings of work and suffered the loss. SJSU's Allison Lang (2-1) pitched three innings of relief and allowed just one earned run as she was credited with the win. Her teammate Jennifer Ames pitched the final four innings to earn the save.
Jachim led UVU from the plate by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Seniors Perez and Deianna Russell each finished with a hit apiece on Senior Day. Michelle Cox and Lopez led SJSU as Cox went 4-for-5 and Lopez went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBIs.
"AP (Amanda Perez) has been a significant part of the middle of the order for her entire career and her stats speak for themselves," added Fairbourne as Perez will go down in the UVU school record books as the all-time leader in homers, RBIs, doubles, total bases and intentional walks. "D (Deianna Russell) was just a breath of fresh air when she arrived. She's a true competitor and has stepped up as long as she's been here."
The Wolverines will conclude PCSC play this weekend by heading to Pocatello, Idaho for a four-game series with Idaho State. The two teams will play a pair of doubleheaders beginning at 12 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
