UVU Forces Extras but BYU Pulls Out Contest, 7-4
May 2, 2012
OREM, Utah - Jamie North delivered a clutch two-out pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras for Utah Valley University but BYU scored three runs in the eighth to pull out the final game between the two teams in 2012, 7-4 (eight innings). The contest marked the final home game of the season for UVU (29-24-1).
"You can't walk eight batters, commit five errors and expect to beat a good team like BYU," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "We want to be a high quality team and we're getting close. But to be there you have to play the game with a certain intelligence, a certain understanding, a certain passion and a certain management of yourself."
"We had a lot of clutch hits in this game. Unfortunately we didn't have the chance to finish it off because of some missed plays and assignments. Give BYU credit though as they took advantage of it."
The Cougars (37-13) struck first as they pieced together a two-out rally in the opening inning and managed to score a run to jump out to a 1-0 lead. BYU then pushed home an unearned run in the fourth to extend its advantage to 2-0.
The Wolverines got their first base runners on in the game in the fourth when BYU's Tori Almond walked both Jessica Uresti and Krystin Jachim. Amanda Perez then stepped to the plate and delivered a two-out, two RBI double to left to tie the game at 2-all.
The lead didn't hold up for long as Delaney Willard led off the fifth for BYU with a solo home run. The RBI that Willard picked up on the solo shot tied a single-season WAC record, as it was her 77th run batted in. The Cougars then added another run later in the frame to extend its lead to 4-2.
UVU got things going offensively again in the bottom of the sixth when Kylee Brinkerhoff and Amanda Robinson both reached with one out. Jachim then came up and delivered an RBI single to left that scored to Brinkerhoff to make it a 4-3 ballgame. The Cougars infield then helped Almond get out of the jam by turning an inning-ending 6-5-3 double play on the hot-hitting Perez.
BYU threatened once again in the seventh as they had two on and just one out but UVU starter Tiffany Mills got Bailie Hicken to line one back to her for another inning-ending double play.
In the last of the seventh, Megan Peay pinch hit for UVU and reached as she was hit by the pitch with one out. Kelli Fox then bunted her into scoring position and North came through with the clutch two-out RBI hit to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
BYU then quickly scored three runs in the eighth as it capitalized on the Wolverines fifth error of the contest. Alexandra Hudson and Ashlee Brawley also added RBI hits for the Cougars in the frame.
Brinkerhoff started off the last of the eighth with a leadoff hit but Robinson hit into a fielder's choice and Jachim grounded into a game-ending double play to seal it for BYU.
Almond went the distance for the Cougars and allowed just four hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out nine to improve to 15-3 on the year. Mills suffered the loss for UVU as she gave up 14 hits and five earned runs (seven total) to drop to 16-15.
Brinkerhoff, Jachim, Perez and North each recorded a hit for UVU, while JC Clayton led BYU by going 4-for-5.
The Wolverines will now have a week off before its next contest when they will head to Salt Lake City to face the University of Utah on May 8. That game will be UVU's final regular season contest of 2012.
