Orem, Utah - The Utah Valley State softball team opened the 2006 season on a positive note by beating Albertson College 10-2 and 11-1. The Wolverine offense had 21 hits in the two games. Sara Roskelley and Rachel Hartgrove each led the attack by going 4-for-6. Hartgrove had two homeruns and six RBI while Roskelley had four RBI.
Emily Zupan had three hits while Cari Hamilton, Heidi Boyer and Chris Jimenez each had two. Jackie Roberts picked up the win in game one by pitching five innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven.
Boyer earned the win in the second game by striking out three and allowing only four hits in four innings of work. Holly Marlow pitched the final inning and allowed no hits.
-I-m happy,- Utah Valley State coach Todd Fairbourne said. -What made me the most happy was in that last inning (of the second game) we made two tough plays even though the game was already over. From the beginning of the game to the end of the game whether we are up by 10 runs or down by 10 runs I want us to play with an edge.-
In game one, the Wolverines jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the third inning. They scored three runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third.
In the first inning Jimenez singled and two batters later Hartgrove singled home Jimenez to give Utah Valley a 1-0 lead. Following Hartgrove-s single, Boyer was hit by a pitch, Roberts reach base on a fielder-s choice and Natalie Paulsen got on base by an Albertson error to load the bases.
Roskelley then drilled a 2 RBI single to right field to score Boyer and Roberts.
Albertson scored its run in the top of the second inning to cut the Wolverine lead to 2-1. Utah Valley extended its lead to 5-1in the bottom half of the inning when Boyer hit a two-run double to left-center.
The Wolverines added four runs in the bottom of the fifth to win by the eight run rule.
Utah Valley jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the third inning in game two. They batted around the order in the second inning and scored seven runs while adding two more in the third.
Hartgrove hit her two homeruns over the left field fence in the second and third innings. Her homerun in the second was a two-run blast. Roskelley also had a 2 RBI double in the second.
The Wolverines added two more runs in the fourth to lead 11-1. Albertson scored its run in the top of the fourth inning.
Utah Valley State returns to action next weekend when they play in a tournament hosted by New Mexico State February 17-19.
