Wolverines Look to Stay Unbeaten at LMU this Weekend
Feb. 16, 2012
OREM, Utah - After starting the 2012 season with two victories over in-state rival Southern Utah in St. George, last weekend, the Utah Valley University softball team will take its unblemished record to Los Angeles, Calif., for a four-game series against Loyola Marymount. The Wolverines and Lions will play doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. MT each day.
UVU and LMU are both members of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference but this weekend's series will not be conference contests as the two play in different divisions. The Wolverines are a member of the PCSC's Mountain Division while the Lions call the Coastal Division home.
Utah Valley (2-0) defeated SUU 5-2 in the season opener last Saturday and followed that up with an 11-3 win over the Thunderbirds on Sunday. Junior Tiffany Mills pitched complete games in both contests for the Wolverines. In 12 innings of work, Mills allowed just five runs on 11 hits while striking out 10. In Sunday's contest she also had a one-hit shutout going into the fourth inning.
Offensively against the T-Birds senior catcher Deianna Russell and junior outfielder Marie Williams led the Wolverines. Russell hit .600 by going 3-for-5 with three RBIs while Williams put up a .500 batting average with a 4-for-8 performance and scored two runs.
This weekend's series with the Lions will be a homecoming of sorts for seven UVU players, as they all hail from the state of California. Of the seven, six of them are from Southern California. They are: Cassie Herrera (Santa Clarita), Mills (Riverside), Jamie North (Placentia), Amanda Perez (La Mirada), Amanda Robinson (Lakewood), Deianna Russell (Chatsworth) and Charlee Cisneros is from Elk Grove, which is just outside of Sacramento.
Loyola Marymount is 4-2 on the season and is coming off of a 24-2 loss to No. 13 UCLA on Tuesday. In that game the Lions jumped out to a 2-1 lead with a first inning two-run homer from Kelly Sarginson but from there it was all Bruins.
Prior to the UCLA contest, LMU went 4-1 at the UC Davis Tournament last weekend. There, the Lions defeated UC Davis (twice), Boise State and Nevada. It's lone loss at the tourney came against the BSU Broncos in its season opener.
In the circle junior Molly Medeiros is leading the Lions with a perfect 4-0 record and a solid 1.71 ERA. She also leads the team in innings pitched (26.1), strikeouts (9) and opponent batting average (.180).
Offensively senior shortstop Sam Fischer is leading LMU with a .471 batting average. Behind her junior outfielder Danielle Smith and junior third baseman Skylar Segura are both hitting .333 apiece. Fischer is also leading the way in the power department with three homers and seven RBIs.
Saturday's first game will be the eight all-time meeting between the Wolverines and Lions, with LMU leading the series 5-2. UVU defeated the Lions in their lone meeting a year ago however as Russell belted an eighth inning three-run home run to give the Wolverines a 5-3 victory over Loyola Marymount at Smith Field.
