Norman, OK - The Utah Valley State softball team gave No. 14 Oklahoma all it could handle for six innings on Saturday. The Wolverines led the nationally ranked Sooners 7-2 after the first inning and maintained the lead until Oklahoma took the lead for good in the sixth inning to beat Utah Valley 19-7. The Sooners ended the game by scoring three runs in the sixth inning and 10 in the seventh to seal the victory

Earlier in the day Utah Valley lost to North Texas 8-5 in eight innings. The two losses drop the Wolverines record to 5-12.

Chris Jimenez and Emily Zupan led the Wolverines at the plate. Jimenez was five for eight with two RBI while Zupan was four for six with three RBI.

Oklahoma led 2-0 after the top of the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning UV batted through the order and scored seven runs to lead 7-2.

The first seven Wolverine batters reached base before Oklahoma was able to get an out. Jimenez led off the inning with a single, Cari Hamilton followed with an infield single and Rachel Hartgrove reached on error to load the bases. Heidi Boyer and Zupan then walked, scoring Jimenez and Hamilton. With the score tied at two Lauren Eppich singled to load the bases again.

Kaeleigh Forsyth then gave the Wolverines the 7-2 lead by nailing a grand slam over the right field fence.

The Sooners cut the Utah Valley lead to 7-5 after the second inning. In the fifth inning, Traci Dickenson hit a homerun over the center field fence to put the Sooners within one run at 7-6.

Oklahoma took the lead for good in the sixth inning at 9-7 after they scored all three of its runs off two homeruns.

Against North Texas, Jimenez and Zupan each had three hits. Jackie Roberts pitched eight innings, striking out eight and scattering eight hits.

The Wolverines led 2-0 after the first inning. Jimenez started the inning with a single to left field. Hamilton then reached on a fielders choice and Rachel Hartgrove singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. With two outs, Hamilton and Hartgrove advanced a base on a wild pitch and then scored on an infield single by Zupan.

Utah Valley hung onto its 2-0 lead until North Texas scored five runs in the fifth inning.

In the bottom half of the fifth the Wolverines cut the Mean Green lead to 5-4 by scoring two runs. With one out Natalie Paulsen singled up the middle and after a sacrifice by Sara Roskelley, Jimenez singled home Kaylie Neal, who was pinch running for Paulsen. Then with two outs Hamilton brought the Wolverines within one run at 5-4 after she singled home Jimenez.

Utah Valley tied the game at five in the bottom of the seventh inning. Roskelley opened the inning by reaching base on a bunt. Jimenez followed by cranking an RBI double to right field to send the game into extra innings. Jimenez tried to stretch her double into a triple but was thrown out a third.

North Texas scored three runs in the top of the eighth and the Wolverines were unable to produce any runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Utah Valley plays North Texas at 9:00 a.m. and Oklahoma at 11:15 on Sunday.
