UVU Game Notes
OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University softball team will conclude its season by heading to Farmers Branch, Texas to compete at the 2012 Great West Conference Tournament Sunday-Monday. The top-seeded Wolverines, who will be looking for their first GWC tournament crown, will open play Sunday at 9 a.m. MT against the fourth-seeded North Dakota Fighting Sioux.
The Wolverines will then play again on Sunday at either 2 p.m. MT or 4:30 p.m. MT depending on if it wins or loses and will face either second-seeded Nebraska-Omaha or third-seeded Houston Baptist. The tournament is double-elimination format and the championship game will then take place Monday at 12 p.m. MT. Live stats for all games can be found by visiting www.WolverineGreen.com.
UVU (29-25-1) will look to rebound at the tournament after it recently suffered a tough 3-2 setback in eight innings in its regular season finale at the University of Utah this past Tuesday.
The Wolverines held a 2-0 lead late in the game against the Utes and pitcher Tiffany Mills was throwing a gem as she held Utah hitless into the fifth inning and scoreless into the sixth. Utah then managed to come through with two runs in the last of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. The game remained tied into the eighth inning when the Utes rallied once again and scored the winning run to take the game 3-2.
UVU will enter the conference tournament as the one-seed after it went 5-1 at the GWC cluster tournament in mid-March. The Wolverines' lone loss then came in its first game against GWC softball-only member Nebraska-Omaha, 1-0, but UVU went on to win its next game against the Mavericks as well as taking two from the Fighting Sioux and two more from the Houston Baptist Huskies.
The Wolverines are led on the season by freshman Jamie North and her .313 batting average. Junior Kylee Brinkerhoff is next with a .307 clip while junior Krystin Jachim follows with a .297 average, 10 homers and 30 RBIs. Sophomore Amanda Robinson is UVU's top power-hitter as she has a team-high 11 home runs and 36 RBIs.
In the circle the Wolverine are led by junior Tiffany Mills and her 16-16 record, her 23 complete games and her 2.57 ERA.
The Fighting Sioux will enter Sunday's contest with an 18-27 overall record and went 2-4 at the GWC cluster tourney. UND has recently dropped three of its last four games but prior to that had won five straight.
Kenna Olsen and her .421 average, five home runs and 27 RBIs lead North Dakota this year. Michelle Frank is the Sioux's top pitcher as she is 9-13 with a 4.55 ERA.
The HBU Huskies will be looking to repeat at the conference tournament after they won last year's tournament in Vermillion, S.D. They will also be looking to snap a six-game losing streak as their last win came against UTSA on April 17. Houston Baptist is 14-31 on the year and they too went 2-4 at the cluster tournament in mid-March.
HBU is led by Michaela Granchelli from the plate and her .305 average, two home runs and a team-high 18 RBIs. Keely Schuler is the Huskies' top pitcher as she is 5-8 with a 2.03 ERA.
Nebraska-Omaha will play at the GWC Tournament for its first and only time this weekend, as they will join the Summit League next season. The Mavericks are 23-16 on the year and went 3-3 at the cluster tournament.
UNO is led on the year by Amber Lutmer and her .330 average, 11 homers and 40 RBIs. From the circle Dana Elsasser and her impressive 0.81 ERA and her 13-8 win-loss record lead the Mavericks.
