OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley University dropped its first of two Saturday matches at the Wolverine Classic, losing in four sets to UC Irvine (19-25, 21-25, 26-24, 15-25). The Wolverines wrap up the Classic later Saturday against Utah at 7 p.m.
Macky Treanor led the Wolverines with 12 kills with Kalani Norris adding eight and Katie Fritzler seven. A staunch offensive attack from UC Irvine helped the Anteaters to the four set win. UCI hit .421 for the match overall and had four different players with at least 13 kills including a match-high 21 from Marisa Bubica.
UC Irvine grabbed the opening set behind a .515 attack percentage including seven kills in eight attempts from Cassidy Pickrell. With the score at 15-14 UCI, the Anteaters closed out the set on a 10-5 run.
Both offenses thrived in the second set, with UC Irvine nearly matching its set one total by hitting .514 while Utah Valley used a balanced output for a .480 percentage. The Anteater attack won out again, though, with UCI scoring three consecutive points following an 18-18 tie and ending the set by scoring seven of the final 10 points.
The Anteaters seemed poised for the sweep late it set three, leading 23-19 following a Wolverine error. Utah Valley would get the next five points though -- a Lauren Stringham kill, two errors by Irvine and kills from Brookelyn Hall and Nakisha Wilden -- to take a 24-23 lead.
With the set tied at 24, two attack errors by UC Irvine sent the match to the fourth set. Treanor had five kills in the set for UVU.
Unlike Friday when UVU came from two sets down to force a deciding set, the Anteaters regained their early offensive success to win the match in the fourth. Pickrell finished with 17 kills while setter Shelley Anderson had 55 assists for UC Irvine.
